TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN,
The baked goods you hold in your hands contain within them the actual remains of Leon Trotsky, Grandfather Toad of Bureaucracy. They were seized on XXXXX -- the anniversary of the Kronstadt suppression -- in an assault launched upon his museum in Mexico City.
For some, these remains are sacred. They are the physical remnants of a martyred revolutionary hero who embodies the idea of a mass proletarian struggle towards some historically determined and formulaic triumph. For others, these remains are profane. They are the remnants of a murderer, bureaucrat, and usurper of authentic revolt. Both views, however, share the museum as their standard of value, the only question being whether Trostky merits exhibition. All that enters into museums becomes frozen and lifeless, transformed into the dead objects which stand over and against us. By seizing, baking, and consuming Trotsky as cookie, we engage with him on our own terms. We give life to the lifeless along with the struggles and tensions embodied within. We are gods. If however, Trotsky was correct about historical necessity, then the fact that his remains are now dessert was written into the very fabric of the October Revolution, and we are merely its messengers.
The holy communion has served as spiritual nourishment for one’s expression of obedience to the god consumed. Alternatively, the consumption of an enemy’s flesh has been seen as the method for absorbing the strength of the opponent. In both interpretations however, the final resting place will always be in shit. We do not want to worship this god or absorb his power. The act of consuming these cookies will not liberate us from the legacy of a Trotsky, but rather asserts our superiority over the dead things which dominate us. When the dead enslave us by serving as the historical artifacts of ideology, we’d prefer that they be appropriated by the hostile force of our imagination and made into baked goods. Thus, to redeem our relation with history, we must desecrate it.We are keeping some cookies with us. Whoever storms the next museum, whoever fires the next shot at history, whoever rekindles the revolts that give us life - we will send you one. Good luck.
